ECKO UNLTD, The Graffiti Tag Brand

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Well known for their unique designs and styles, as well as their use of high quality fabrics and strict attention to detail, Eckō Unltd is without a doubt one of the leading forces within the underground/ urban fashion industry today.
Its creator, Marc Ecko, is one of the most infamous entrepreneurs in the world, who turned his love of art and graffiti into one of the most daring statements of all time; tagging an Air Force One jet.
The name for the brand came about from a family story, when Marc’s mother fell pregnant with his twin sister Marci. Unaware that she was carrying twins, a scan revealed a second heartbeat which the doctors believed to be an echo in the fluid. That echo turned out to be Marc, who in 1996 legally changed his name from Marc Milecofsky to Marc Ecko, in reference to the event; hence Eckō Unltd.
From starting out with just six t-shirts and a can of spray paint, Mark Ecko has built one of the largest fashion empires in the world, with an expansion of 12 different lines including skater brand Zoo York and 50 Cent’s G-Unit clothing line.
After falling into over $6.5 million dollars worth of debt in 1997, and almost facing bankruptcy, Mark Ecko was able to gain outside financing and turn his brand around, forcing the entire fashion industry to take notice of his urban apparel.
As most urban clothing brands are owned by those with direct links to the Hip-Hop movement itself, such as Jay-Z’s Rocawear or Russell Simmons Phat Farm, Mark Ecko stands out as an entrepreneur who made it big without being an entertainer as well. As more and more people began wearing Eckō Unltd all around the world, few knew the face behind the name. That was, until he released an internet video of himself tagging an air force one jet with the words “Still Free”.

The stunt was labelled as “Tag of the Century” and became an internet sensation with over 114 million views worldwide; the video gained such attention that the air force began investigating the incident, only to find that it had all been an elaborate hoax. Marc had rented a Boeing 747 and painted it on one side to look like President Bush’s Air Force One jet, it looked so authentic that the air force wasn’t sure whether the plane had been targeted or not. Media outlets and new reporters began to report the incident on various television networks all around the world, resulting in global advertising for Marc Ecko Enterprises as well as three denials from the pentagon; after the stunt had been filmed the original owner of the jet decided to keep the Air Force One design.
The Eckō Unltd logo can now be seen everywhere throughout the world; from urban and suburban cities to small rural towns, Marc Ecko Enterprises has gone onto become a monumental force within urban, hip-hop, skater and underground cultures.
Eckō Unltd clothing has also been seen on a number of celebrities, including the likes of Justin Timberlake, David Beckham, Linkin Park, Boxer Miguel Cotto, Mixed Martial Arts fighter Patrick Cote and High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens. Eckō Unltd has also worked alongside the legendary Lyricist Lounge crew through the release of their “Underground Airplay” compilation, featuring artists such as Obie Trice, Killah Priest, Kardinal Offishall, Asheru, Mos Def and Zion I.
As well as Eckō Unltd, Zoo York and G-Unit clothing, Marc Ecko Enterprises has also released a number of sub-lines including Eckō Function, Eckō Red for Women, Marc Ecko Leather, Marc Ecko Watches, Marc Ecko Footwear, Marc Ecko Cut and Sew the new Eckō Unlimited; they also took over Avirex in 2005 and have released their own video game unit featuring titles such as “TAG - The Power of Paint” and “Marc Ecko’s Getting Up - Contents Under Pressure”.
Marc Ecko Enterprises also runs another non-profit organisation called Sweat Equity Enterprises (SEE), which allows children and young people from all walks of life to design their own styles of clothes and accessories. The organisation is a project-based youth development learning program that allows young people the freedom to express themselves creatively in a professional environment. Mark Ecko Enterprises also helps to raise money for an orphanage in Ukraine, the Tikva Children’s Home in Odessa that seeks to help impoverished children.

AKADEMIKS - The Devil In The Details

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Akademiks are well known for their unique and stylistic approach towards fashion design; some of their pieces are truly breathtaking, with styles and designs that are somewhat different from most urban apparel brands. They offer a more sophisticated look to the masses and pride themselves on their unique designs and quality fabrics. As such they have earned a great deal or respect within hip-hop, urban and skater circles, and continue to astound the market with revolutionary new designs and high quality production every season.

Brothers Donwan and Emmett Harrell, alongside Elliot Betesh, owner of Dr Jay’s, originally founded the company in 1999. Their popularity soared in 2001 when Hip-Hop rapper Fabolous advertised the brand through the release of his debut album, Ghetto Fabolous. The brand gained further recognition when they released their sister-line, PRPS jeans, a line of luxury, super-premium quality denim that has been seen on many high profile celebrities including the likes of 50 Cent, Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Lindsay Lohan, Victoria Beckham, Tom Cruise, Katy Holmes and UK rapper Dizzie Rascal.

Each pair of PRPS jeans is individually handmade and crafted from Japanese denim artisan, resulting in each pair having its own distinctive and unique design; in fact the Akademiks company motto is “DENIM IS KING”, and the company prides itself for their “vintage washed, hand-dressed, hand-brushed, over-dyed tinted, potassium-sponged and tripled-dipped indigo treatments”.

“We started out as a vision that sought to empower our customer through “intelligent” design and are now highly credited as the source of the new creativity present in the street wear category. Since the beginning, Akademiks and its brand extensions have offered original, stand-alone product that is ahead of its time yet right on target”

The quality of Akademiks products is one of the main reasons as to why they are so respected in their field. Donwan and Emmett Harrell have a long history of design and have worked alongside some of the biggest names in fashion, including the likes of Donna Karan, Ecko Unltd, Russell Simmon’s Phat Farm, and Nike; in fact Donwan is actually one of Nike’s former top 10 designers.

“We’re just trying to step outside the box of what you wouldn’t expect from a regular urban company. We started out from nothing and we’ve generated this big monster that’s global, we’re doing footwear, underwear, bags, outerwear, children’s, men’s kid’s, infants. So I like to think it’s a very successful venture between Dr Jay’s and Akademiks”

Akademiks are certainly one of the most respected brands within the urban/ hip-hop fashion industry, with a large number of loyal devotees flocking to buy the latest Akademiks designs. They have recently teamed up with Ashanti through the release of their “I Declare Me” line, a brand designed to stand against issues such as domestic violence, discrimination, racism and eating disorders.

Although Akademiks have built their reputation upon respectable, high quality urban design, the company did achieve some degree of notoriety through the release of their advertising slogan “Read Books, Get Brain”. The advertisement was initially released through the New York MTA bus line, who did not realise that the tagline had a double meaning. When it was pointed out to them that “get brain” was actually a slang term for oral sex, they quickly banned the slogan.

Akademiks would rather let their products speak for themselves and allow their customers to choose what they like and what they don’t; they do not generally team up with celebrities in order to sell clothes.

In a recent interview with Highbrid Nation, Emmett Harrell commented:

“I’m not like Jay-Z, I don’t have a record label, I’m not a big, you know, music mogul and I haven’t influential people following me and celebrities in my campaigns, I don’t do that, I don’t want to give away my company, I don’t want to sell the consumer an image of someone else or a rapper they can be like. I want to sell them on, this is good product, you wear it this way, here’s a little subliminal message inside the pocket somewhere, it’s all about the product.”

From overcrowded trains and busses to busy city streets, from schools, colleges and universities to workplaces all over the world, Akademiks clothing can be seen everywhere.

South Pole - The leading urban fashion label

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

Starting out from humble beginnings, South Pole have set themselves up as one of the leading distributors of urban apparel, offering a vast array of styles and designs to suit any taste. With a fan base as diverse as the products they offer, South Pole clothing can be seen all over the world, and has been worn by many major celebrities including the likes of R&B/ Rap superstars such as Mobb Deep, Ciara, Marques Houston, Keyshia Cole, Coolio, Mario, Nick Cannon, Omarion, 3LW and B2K amongst a host of others.
The company was originally established during the early 1980’s back when hip-hop music and urban culture was just breaking through into the mainstream. As the demand for urban street wear began to rise, brothers David and Kenny Khym decided to establish a line of urban clothing which would eventually become one of the largest urban apparel brands in the world alongside the likes of major labels such as Ecko Unltd, Rocawear, New Era and Russell Simmons Phat Farm.
The Khym brothers originally immigrated to the United States from Korea in 1977, after which they invested $15,000 dollars into their first retail clothing outlet. They began trading in Brooklyn, New York, however due to an increase in rent, they soon relocated to Jamaica. In 1991 the brothers established a wholesale company entitled Wicked Fashions in order to import clothes from Pakistan; the company was later renamed  South Pole in honour of a team of  explorers who had recently become the first Koreans to reach the South Pole.
A little under five years later Kenny Khym decided to leave South Pole in order to found his own clothing store, Against All Odds, a company that specializes in Hip-Hop orientated fashion.
Since its conception in 1996, Against All Odds has gone onto to become very successful, with approximately 70 retail stores in various different states such as New York, Arizona, Florida, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Texas, Connecticut and California; the company  sells a number of different brands including South Pole, as well as labels such as New Era, Ed Hardy, Rocawear, G-Unit, Akademiks, Ecko Unltd and G-Unit for women.

South Pole clothes are now manufactured in Pakistan, China, India and Vietnam, and are sold throughout major retail chains such as J.C. Penny and Sears, as well as a whole range of online sites such as yukka.co.uk.
From starting out with only a $15,000 investment, South Pole reached sales of over $100 million dollars in 2001 with over $350 million dollars worth of sales in 2005. David Khym was awarded JC Penney’s Supplier Divisional Award for Men’s Apparel in 2001, 2002 and 2003 and was also selected as Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year in 2004.
South Pole offers a vast range of products from stylish and sophisticated formal wear to casual garments such as T-shirts, hoodies and jeans; their ranges of clothes are made with high quality material, intricate patterns and designs as well as strict attention to detail.

NEW ERA CAPS: MARVEL SERIES

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

With the advent of modern technology and CGI animation, it has recently become possible for the first time in history for the stories and fantasies of Marvel Comics to be adapted for the big screen; as such Marvel has been making a comeback as innovators in modern storytelling, with a whole range of marvel characters being redesigned for major motion pictures.
In recent years we have seen the likes of the X-Men, Spiderman, Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Punisher, the Silver Surfer and the Fantastic Four all making their way onto the big screen. With such an incredibly diverse following all over the world, it seems only natural that these characters should also breakthrough into the mainstream fashion industry, and what better way to do so than through the likes of the legendary New Era Cap Company.
New Era has been going on for almost 100 years now and has become the leading manufacturer of baseball caps worldwide.  From hip-hop rappers such as Eminem, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent to R&B superstars such as Lauryn Hill, Beyonce Knowles and Alicia Keys, everyone who’s anyone has been seen wearing New Era at some point. With the routes of New Era going all the way back to 1920 and the routes of Marvel Comics going back to 1939, it seems no coincidence that New Era have teamed up with Marvel Comics through the release of their famed New Era Marvel Heroes Series.

The X-Men

The X-Men stories are one of the most popular within the Marvel Universe, containing a whole range of characters with super-human abilities such as being able to fly, shape shift and control people’s minds to shooting laser beams through the eyes, walking on walls and being able to control anything metal. The main appeal of the X-men is that the stories contain not just one hero but many, with an equal number of villains.
During recent years three X-men movies have been created as well as a spin off based around one of the main characters, Wolverine, being released this year. The series was originally created by writer Stan Lee in 1963, and has since gone onto become one of the best selling comic book series of all time.

SPIDER MAN
Another creation from the legendary Stan Lee is the Amazing Spiderman, a story of a young man named Peter Parker who was bitten by a radioactive spider which resulted in him attaining super human, spider like powers. As with most marvel comics, the Spiderman series depicts a conflict of dualities, a struggle between good and evil, stories of right and wrong, of heroes and villains.
The series is also famed for the introduction of legendary super villains, most notably being the likes of the Green Goblin, Dr Octopus, the Lizard, Venom and Carnage; the series actually becomes very sinister as it goes on, making the Spiderman stories popular amongst both adults and children.
Spiderman first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 during August 1962 and has since gone onto become somewhat of a phenomenon. Nobody expected Spiderman to become as popular as it did, however after sales of Amazing Fantasy #15 reached an all time high, it was decided to further release a series of comics dedicated to the wall crawling hero. Spiderman became so popular that early editions of his comic books are now worth ridiculous sums on money, in fact the actual value of Amazing Fantasy #15 is worth in excess of $50000 dollars!
In recent years three movie adaptations have been created with plans for many more to come; there have also been numerous animated series created through the years as well as low budget movies.

THE SILVER SURFER
Another hero from the Marvel universe is the Silver Surfer who first appeared in the Fantastic Four #48 during March 1966. Aimed to appeal to the more sophisticated Marvel fan, the story of the Silver Surfer revolves around a young scientist named Norrin Radd, who made a deal with a destructive entity known as Galactus in order to save his home planet from destruction.
Norrin Radd became imbued with a tiny portion of Galactus’ cosmic power, allowing him to travel faster than the speed of light on a cosmic, silver surfboard, roaming the cosmos in search of new planets for Galactus to consume. After meeting with the Fantastic Four the Silver Surfer was forced to rediscover his nobility of spirit, and betrayed Galactus in order to save the world, however in doing so, was exiled on earth as punishment. Both the Fantastic Four and the Silver Surfer have recently appeared on screen together in “Fantastic Four – Rise of the Silver Surfer”.

DR DOOM
Let’s face it, if it weren’t for the super villains, comic books would be pretty boring; without the villains all we would have is a bunch of superheroes flying around, crawling up walls and wondering what to do with themselves. We might see Spiderman claiming jobseekers allowance, or the X-Men hosting “How Clean is your house?” without the villains there is no story.  Just as every Marvel story has a superhero, so too are there super villains; in fact in some cases the villains come to be loved more than the heroes, and one such case is the legendary Dr Doom.
Dr Doom is the arch nemesis of the Fantastic Four, he first appeared on the scene in Fantastic Four issue #5 during July 1962, and has since gone onto become somewhat of an icon within modern contemporary pop culture. After a failed experiment leaves his face disfigured, Victor Von Doom adorns an iron mask and a set of armour and becomes hell bent on world domination; he seeks to destroy the Fantastic Four and control the world, and will stop at nothing to reach his goals.
Out of all Marvel Comics super villains, Dr Doom is one of the most recognisable, who has fought and opposed more heroes than any other villain. In 2009, IGN ranked Dr Doom as the 3rd Greatest Comic Book Villain of All Time and Wizard Magazine rated Doctor Doom the as 4th greatest villain of all time. As such, it is easy to see why Dr Doom has become so loved around the world.
